[ENGLISH BELOW] I totem rappresentano delle simbologie legate a diverse entità (naturali,spirituali o animali) ognuna con un particolare significato , importanti in diverse tribù native.
La parola deriva da ototeman appartenente alle tribù del gruppo linguistico algonchino.
Esistono alcuni culti basati sui totem (totemismo) , il significato attribuito a queste simbologie varia in base alla tradizione , in alcune una vera e propria venerazione del totem, per diversi culti invece il totem rappresenta la simbologia di possessione volontaria o trasmutazione , ovvero attraverso la simbologia del totem assimilare e richiamare a se la figura rappresentata avendo un contatto profondo con essa e quindi stabilire un legame, in base alla situazione anche per assimilarne il suo potere.
In alcune tradizioni bisognava passare attraverso un iniziazione per avere un totem.
Di solito i totem venivano realizzati intagliando sul legno delle figure spesso raffiguranti animali , sovrapponendoli così da formare dei pali di totem.
Secondo diversi studi i pali totem assumono vari utilizzi che variano a secondo della tradizione, alcuni sono come segno di riconoscimento del proprio villaggio , simbologie spirituali, simbologie famigliari dei membri della tribù, mezzo per raccontare delle storie , commemorazione per i defunti , raffigurazioni di leggende e creature mitologiche , vasi mortuari e addirittura mezzo di comunicazione di sfida nei confronti del singolo o di un'altra tribù.
Erroneamente correnti new age considerano la simbologia del totem come sinonimo di animale guida quando in realtà non è così.
Seppur il totem in diverse culture ha sempre avuto vari ruoli è importante sottolineare la differenza passata ma anche presente di questa rappresentazione che non ha nulla a che vedere con il significato dell'animale guida nelle correnti attuali.

According to several studies, the totem poles take on various uses that vary according to tradition, some are a sign of recognition of their village, spiritual symbolism, family symbology of the members of the tribe, a means of telling stories, commemoration for the dead, legends depictions and mythological creatures, mortuary vessels and even a means of communication defying the individual or another tribe.
Erroneously new age currents consider the symbolism of the totem as a synonym of guide animal when in reality it is not so.
Although the totem in different cultures has always had various roles, it is important to underline the past but also present difference of this representation that has nothing to do with the meaning of the guide animal in the current currents.
