Per i popoli che si affacciano sul Mediterraneo questa è la festa della primavera, la Natura si sveglia sempre di più e la vita riprende, questa festa è associata alla fertilità, per i popoli del nord dell’Europa invece la festa della fertilità slitta a Beltane, per le ovvie differenze climatiche.
In questa giornata il Sole sorge precisamente ad Est e tramonta precisamente ad Ovest, fornendo così dodici ore di luce e dodici ore di buio, la festa segna il punto di transizione tra il lato oscuro e quello chiaro dell’anno, è tempo di riti per nuove speranze, nuovi inizi, nuove relazioni, progetti e cambiamenti di vita.
Etimologia Ostara
La festa è di origine germanica, infatti prende il nome da quello della dea Eostre, patrona della fertilità. La divinità si diffuse, con relativo culto e usanze festive, a tutta l'Europa toccata dalle invasioni germaniche. Essa aveva alcune affinità con divinità di culture più antiche come in Grecia, quella di Estia, e nell'impero romano Vesta.
I popoli anglo-sassoni chiamavano il mese lunare corrispondente all'incirca al nostro aprile, Eostre-monath, e in questo periodo celebravano feste in onore della dea Eostre associata a vari aspetti connessi col rinnovarsi della vita quali la primavera, la fertilità e la lepre (per la velocità con cui prolifica).
