Il Sabba - The Sabbath

Il Sabba - The Sabbath

The Sabbath has been used since ancient times to represent a particular day where witches met to celebrate pagan rituals and ceremonies.
The term Sabba appears perhaps the first time in process papers around the 1400s, used in a derogatory manner during the persecutions mainly to describe the meetings of the witches.
The name seems to derive from an alteration of the Hebrew term Shabbat (the feast of celebrated rest on Saturday) being also under prejudice and accused of celebrating occult practices.
Several studies on Sabba come from sources of trial records for witchcraft and from demonological treatises between 1400 and 1600.
It is difficult to place with certainty when the Sabbath was held, some say during the night between Saturday and Sunday, others say Friday night, some even on Monday.

However, some studies state that the Sabba were originally simply gatherings to celebrate pagan festivities, therefore linked to feasts of natural cycles, such as sowing, harvesting and so on.
Only later were the meetings with the Demon linked to these gatherings.
For this reason the term Sabba as a derogatory form arises after the persecutions and is altered by confessions extrapolated with atrocious tortures, then discovered to be mostly false.

The Sabbath described took place during the night, the witches gathered and sprinkled with ointments that allowed them to fly to the meeting place, there was the Devil waiting for them. Before the party and the orgies took place the ceremonies of denial of the Christian religion and oath of fidelity and adoration of the Demon (children were also brought to have this new "baptism", often children of witches or kidnapped children). After the festivities it was marked with the sign of the Demon and he himself distributed as a gift of fidelity of the supernatural powers to the witches.
However, the dynamics described refer to Sabba and encounters with the Devil. During the trials, signs of the celebrated Sabbath were searched and therefore evidence of the witch's demonic pact that corresponded to the mark of evil, very often this sign was simply a birthmark, a stain of the skin, a common scar or a mole of bad luck.
Studies have assumed that people under torture elaborated stories by merging their reality like rural festivities (pagan festivals of thanks to divinities linked to life cycles) to fantasies that they were obliged to confess in order not to be tortured anymore and knowing they were going to meet to the fires but perhaps better than the atrocious medieval Christian tortures.
With the birth of neo-pagan currents, this term was taken up and cleaned of the pejorative sense, in the collective imagination it resumed its meaning of day of rest and celebration.
Margaret Alice Murray 1863-1963 Egyptologist, Anthropologist and writer of neo-pagan books, she mentioned in her books the terms Sabba and Esbat describing the eight parties related to the movement of the sun and the latter linked instead to the Lunar cycle, an ancient term that would mean "feast "with a sexual connotation used during the trials as an accusation of the alleged behavior of the witches, it seems to be born for an error of the Murray diverted from the accidental assonance to the Sabba term, also this term however wants to represent the ancient ceremonial practices dedicated to the lunar cycles.

The Sabba therefore arises as a derogatory term, but the origins of its meaning are pre-Christian and linked to the ceremonies of pagan festivities celebrated once in different cultures and traditions.
